My modem on my Macintosh has a problem which I recently decided to look into. No program but SetClock is able to successfully auto-dial. The number is dialed and then things get strange. In Mouse Exchange Terminal as soon as dialing is complete I hear a click and then nothing. It appears the phone connection has been broken. In MacTerminal as soon as dialing is complete a message pops up briefly to the effect that "the phone was answered but no computer was on the other end". However, in this case the connection stays up, the phone rings, and you can work in the window when the remote computer does answer. In Agent, which you use to call the MacUnderground BBS (which got me started on this) as soon as the number is dialed it immediately begins dialing the number again. I have a Capetronic QT1200 modem. The cable is as follows: Mac DB-9 modem DB-25 -------- ----------- 3 gnd. 7 gnd. 5 xmit. 2 data in 6 DTR 20 DTR 7 carrier det. 8 carrier det. 9 rec. 3 data out The DB-9 end of the cable is plugged into the pigtail which came in the 512KE to Plus upgrade kit and then the DIN-8 connector is plugged into the Macintosh. Previously, I was using the cable with only four lines. Just recently I had the 7 -> 8 line added. Adding this line had no effect on the problem. The programs all still work the same. Any ideas for new things to try would be appreciated. -- Marc Rhodes marc@ncrcpx.Cambridge.NCR.COM
