[comp.sys.mac] Is Edit 2.0 free to copy?

ajq@mace.cc.purdue.edu (John O'Malley) (08/04/88)

Question: Is Edit 2.0 by Consulair and Apple a program that's distributable
in the public domain? Or is it commercial or part of a commercial package?

The program is a simple text editor that does its job well. I need to know
if it's legal to make copies of it and use it. Or better, I need to know
if it can be purchased, presuming it's not PD.

The simple one word answer is: no. Edit 2.0, and by the way the latest
version is 2.1, is a copy righted Apple product. It is not free to
redistribute, though you can license it for redistribution.

I asked this question about three months ago. I received a resounding silence.
I, also would be interested in the answer.

So where does one obtain Edit 2.1? (I am still using 2.0d1.)

Excuse me, Jordan, but wasn't Edit part of the package the rights of which
were reverted to Consulair Corp. (Bill Duvall, et al)? I agree that it is
not PD or freely distributable, but I don't think that it is an Apple
product any longer and after checking the signature resources, it looks like
the copyright has been W.S. Duvall, Consulair Corp. at least through the
version 2.x stuff.

The current version is 2.1, and it is NOT in the public domain. Apple was
selling distribution licenses for some pittance; I don't know if Consulair
is still offering the licenses now that the Mac 68K Development System (MDS)
has been ceded back to them.

Edit 2.1 is available for licensing from Apple Software Licensing, or ina single copy package from APDA as part of the MDS 2.0 Update Package.
I also believe that it was sent to a number of the online services,
such as Genie, Compuserve, and Delphi.

Dear Dennis -
Apple returned marketting rights to MDS to Bill and Consulair, but
retained rights to Edit and other parts of the old MDS package (MacDB is
an example).
The contract is long and involved, and it would not be proper to
discuss it here on the net, but the bottom line is that Apple has rights
to Edit 2.0/2.1 and it cannot be freely redistributed as public domain
software.

I received mail from a couple of people, including someone from Apple, who
both said that Edit 2.1 (the newer version) is definitely NOT public domain or
distributable.

That presented me with a problem: find another text editor that is about as
easy to use as Edit is, about the level of power that Edit is... this actually
isn't all that easy a task! So I called Consulair, and they offered to sell
Edit to me (or rather, my collegue who's thinking about using it on 20 Macs)
as a stand-alone product rather than part of the Consulair Development
package, which is what it normally comes in.

So, ifya want to use Edit but you don't own their development system, give
'em a call! They seem willing to make deals.

There's been a lot going on here about copying Edit 2.0 and stuff, which is
owned by Consulair. Now, if you are going to go to Consulair and buy
Edit from them, I'd say you have a better choice, especially for pgm develop-
ment: there's an editor put out by Paragon Concepts called QUED/M that can do
major stuff. QUED, the original version had features such as autosave on
every xxxth keypress, save to two files (auto backup), multiple file editing
up to end of memory, auto tiling (even zoom before apple put a zoom box in its
windows). The new version has macros, unlimited depth undo, sorting, search
unopened files, definable command keys, etc. The damn thing is GOOD. If you
are going to spend money for an editor instead of grabbing a PD one, take
a look at this one.
