[comp.sys.mac] HELP: DA memory hogs don't run

bushnel@ucscb.UCSC.EDU (60163000) (08/24/88)

I have a problem running the UnStuffIt DA that was recently posted on
the net. I have noticed that every time I select it from the Apple menu, the
computer beeps and doesn't open UnStuffIt. Upon reading the instructions I
have found that this is because I don't have enough memory. I closed all of my
applications. The "About the Finder..." dialog tells me I have about 500k of
free memory, and I notice that the system takes up about 350k. According to
the Utilities Guide, UnStuffIt needs 160-170k to run, well under the 500k
available. Why, then, doesn't it load?

By the way, this isn't the first time I've had this problem.

Is there a way of adjusting the amount of memory used for desk
accessories? Are desk accessories allocated memory through the system
allocation? If so, can the system memory allocation be manually changed, or is
memory for the system allocated dynamically? If desk accessories are allocated
memory through the system allocation and the system memory is allocated
dynamically, why doesn't the system allocate itself the additional memory when
UnStuffIt is selected? Does the system put a limit on the amount of memory
allocated for desk accessories? If so, what is this limit, and can it be
changed?

I am currently running System version 4.2 and Finder version 6.0 on a 1
Megabyte Mac SE. INITs currently include " Jasmine", " Vaccine", "Moire",
"heirDA", "Remember?", "HDpartition", "Shield", "Private", "Earth", and
"SFVol".

Thanks in advance for your replies, and I apologize if these questions
have been asked before.
