Does anyone know what kind of speed increases for a 4th Dimension database (+150000 records)using Tops by using ethernet instead of appletalk? I had talked with a developer in Michigan who said he was getting around a 5X increase which to me makes sense with ethernet being around 40X faster than appletalk. On the other hand I read in Macworld something about only a 30-40% increase with a small network. Does anyone have the strait scoop (experience is welcome)? steven neruda (neruda@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu) sorry, no cute saying today.

We have used AppleShare on EtherTalk and are using a mainframe communications package over EtherTalk. If everything is on Ether it is a big win. (i.e. around a ten fold speed up, but it depends alot upon the specific application) However there is a huge lose if you are communicating from LocalTalk to EtherTalk, it is over an order of magnitude slower. TRY to keep everything either one way or the other, because if you are using both Ether and Local you are going to have big problems. phil
