[comp.sys.mac] I need some help with a strange disk crash

phil@mit-amt (a phil sohn) (08/31/88)

I crashed the hard disk on one of our Mac II and would
like some help recovering it. All the files are still there,
but they are not visible from the finder, only from SFGetFile
boxes and such. I have tried rebuilding the desktop to no avail.
I am not looking forward to putting all the files on floppies or
some other medium.

Most strange - from the description you give, it sounds like the
Invisible flag for all files has been turned on. You can use ResEdit
to change all the flags (slow and tedious, especially on a hard disk),
or you can modify the program given in Tech Note 68 to turn off the
invisible bit for all the programs on the disk. (If Tech Notes/programming
tools are not available, let me know directly and I'll try to send you
the program). (If you have MPW you can probably use the SetFile tool
and regular expressions to do the same thing, with less work).

The other possibility is that all the files are very far off the screen, but
rebuilding the desktop should have fixed this. If the scroll bars are
empty on the desktop, the files are invisible; if they are not the files
are way, way, way out there.

(obligitory warnings) If you do get the files back, tread lightly, as they
may not be what you think they are. They should be backed up, the disk
initialized, and the files restored, if at all possible.

I suggest you try the following. Boot the machine from floppy, with a
disk containing the latest system and finder and a program that lets you delete
files, like MacTools, ResEdit etc. Make this program the startup application.
This should launch you into the program, and the mac II's hard disk
should appear. Proceed to DELETE the desktop on the Mac II. Sometimes
rebuilding the desktop is not enough. You won't lose anything that isn't
already on the harddisk, maybe some icons from programs that you have trashed,
maybe a few comments, but after deleting the desktop, then quiting and allowing
the system build a new one should return your hard disk into working order.
It doesn't sound like you've trashed your volume table, so I think that
the desktop is your only trouble, anyway if it fails, you haven't really done
any extra damage to your hard disk.
