[comp.sys.mac] AppleShare & AppleTalk some questions ?

8650768r@cit5.cit.oz (8650768r) (08/30/88)

Hello Networld,

If any MAC experts could direct me to some documentation on the
AppleTalk protocal and AppleShare system could you please drop me a line.
I wish to find any available information on the AppleTalk protocal
and how much its going to cost me.
Also can anyone tell me if AppleTalk is available for licencing from
Apple or is it public domain, I believe that the TOPS network uses the
AppleTalk protocal for i.b.m. (note small letters :-> ).

	Thanks in advance,
					Mick Monaghan

AppleTalk is pretty well documented in a work called "Inside Appletalk"
available from APDA (APDA #KNSIAT). AFP (the filing protocol used
by AppleShare) is documented in APDA #KNBAFP. AFP at least is proprietary
(says so on the first page of the documentation). I don't know anything
about developing AppleTalk/AppleShare for another computer, if that is
what you are looking for, but I would check around before jumping into that
water - there are already AppleTalks for many machines, and ways to hook
into still others.
