-< RD54-Seek/Recal problem worse >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recal/seek problem using the RD54 has gotten worse! It now takes
about 2 1/2 minutes to boot the mac....
This is what happens (Note: Grrrrr below means the awful voice
coil noise the RD54 makes on a full disk seek or recal):
Power up Disk
Disk spins up, get Grrrrrrr !This is ok, initial recal or seek
Power up Mac
Disk ACTIVE LIGHT COMES ON and stays on until Mac looks for disks
!Is this Right? or a problem
Disk does Grrrrrr, then does 18 reads during Grrrrrrr
!This is ok, the ACB-4070 board
!Does 18 zone reads to chk bad blks
Happy Mac comes on
Grrrrrrrr
Welcome box (box only) comes up
Grrrrrrrr
'Welcome to Macintosh'
Grrrrrrrr
'Macsbug installed'
Grrrrrrrr
Grrrrrrrr
Grrrrrrrr
1st INIT icon shows up
Grrrrrrrr
Grrrrrrrr
Grrrrrrrr
2nd init icon
Grrrrrrrr
Grrrrrrrr
etc to last icon
7-8 Grrrrrrrr occur
Menu bar appears
4-5 Grrrrrrrr occur
Finder window opens
Grrrrrrrrr
Some icons appear
Grrrrrrrrr
The rest of the icons appear.
Note: Grrrrrrrr means a high volume medium pitched noise the RD54
makes while (it seems) it is seeking the whole disk. This lasts
about 2 seconds per Grrrrrrrr
It seems to occur on file opens or searches.
If a file is already open and you are just writing to it, such as
a file restore, it seems to fly and work correctly.
Any ideas????
