System 6.0 does not offer background printing for the Imagewriter. Makes me
wonder about future Apple support for non-laser printers. I guess the
priority was on getting laser-writer spooling since Macs are moving into the
corporate world these days, but considering the speed difference between
lasers and dot matrix printers, spooling seems more necessary on the latter.

I had two spoolers that used to work until I got multifinder: Superspool and
Maxprint. Anyone know the story? Do either of these have multifinder
compatible versions? Are there any good PD or SW spoolers that work under
multifinder?
While I'm on the subject, there used to be a nice DA called savior which did
auto-saves at user set time intervals in any application. It also doesn't
work under MF. Anyone know of an update, or a similar program that does
work under MF?

I received SuperSpool 5.0 from Supermac Software just a few weeks ago.
It works superbly under the Multifinder environment. Supermac has
changed the program into an INIT, which gets loaded at startup time.
Eventhough I am running the 'famous' System 6.0, I have had no
problems with SuperSpool 5.0. The only thing is that you must startup
your Mac with either the Finder or Multifinder, no Command-Option
Double Click on the Multifinder from the finder. The reason for this
is that Superspool behaves as an application under Multifinder, and
allocates memory when it is printing (or despooling as they call it),
and deallocates it when it is done.

Overall, it behaves great with a very good interface via the DA (now
called Print Queue again). With the DA, you can deinstall Superspool
temporarily for those programs that access the Imagewriter directly
without following Apple standards, and reinstall again when you want.
By definition of the INIT, Superspool is there available at all times
after startup, unless you deinstall it or remove the INIT from the
system folder.

SuperSpool 5.0 runs with Suitcase, and behaves properly with Word
3.0.2, and many others. Amazingly enough, it FontDisplay 5.4 printed
out my large catalogue without error via SuperSpool. My
congratulations to Supermac on a job well done.

Upgrade information from old copies of SuperSpool may be obtained by
contacting SuperMac Software at 295 North Bernardo Ave, Mountain View,
CA 94043 (Phone: (415) 964-8884).

SuperSpool 5.0 works under MultiFinder. Write to SuperMac for upgrade
information (I think it'll cost you $10-20). I've also seen a couple of
PD/SW spoolers, but I don't remember their names (if I run across them,
I'll let you know). In regards to an auto-saver, someone is advertising
such a product in MacUser magazine (again, I don't remember offhand the
name).

Fine review of superspool 5.0.

When do the rest of us who paid for it get it??

Michael,

The upgrades to the Commercial version of SuperSpool 5.0 has been shipping
since July '88 and the upgrades to the DataFrame Utility software just started
shipping in August '88.

If you haven't received your upgrade, I would strongly advised that you either
call SuperMac Software (415-962-2900) or write them at:

          SuperMac Software
          295 N. Bernardo Ave.
          Mountain View, CA 94043

          Attn: Software Upgrades

And inquire as to your status.

Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to E-Mail me.

I purchased a copy of SuperSpool 5.0 last week (from MacConnection). If
there is an "upgrades to the Commercial version of SuperSpool 5.0", I did
not receive it, or know anything about it.

The following are some of my experiences with the Version 5.0 that I
received:

SuperMac Software
P. O. Box 390725

Dear Sir/Madam:

I have just purchased Version 5.0 of SuperSpool. After one morning's
experience with it, I am less than pleased with the product, for the
following reasons:

1. LOSS OF DATA: With my printer turned off, I printed several documents.
SuperSpool's PrintQueue DA said that they were printing, and the spool files
slowly disappeared, just as if they were! When they had completely
disappeared from PrintQueue (and from the spool folder), I turned on the
ImageWriter and nothing happened - they were truly gone. Although
things seem to work fine (but see below) if I'm careful to have my printer
on and ready before I print anything, I find the loss of data under these
circumstances inexcusable.

2. While I found no caveats in the manual or release notes about this, it
seems that I cannot print a window using Command-shift-4 while
SuperSpool is installed. At best, I get only a beep; at worst I have to restart

my Mac. Even "Deinstalling" SuperSpool from the PrintQueue DA does not
seem to help cure the problem.

3. Contrary to the indications on manual pages 12-13, I seem to get a
separate SuperSpool file for each PAGE of any multipage document. Thus
the Preview window is always previewing a single-page document, and the
mini-arrows and "Page x of y" at the bottom of the Preview window do not
appear. The "Status" line is always "Printing page 1 of 1". I suppose it
could be considered a feature to be able to schedule and cancel each page of
a multi-page document separately, but the manual certainly does not seem
to document this "feature."

4. While typing text into Word 3.01 at the same time SuperSpool was
printing a document, the display of input characters in the Word window
sometimes lags my typing by 6-10 characters. I do type with both hands,
but am by no means a fast typist.

5. I have gotten one page of garbled output from SuperSpool (see enclosed
sample). This may have been a result of trying to print a window with
Command-shift-4 (?), but the garbled output was printed AFTER restarting
the Mac, and with no fancy tricks tried after the restart.

All of this has taken place on a Mac Plus with 2.5M of memory and a 20M
hard disk, running under MultiFinder of System 5.0.

I look forward to a update to Version 5.0 which will fix these problems.

	Sincerely

	Dave Emme--
