[comp.sys.mac] Wide Draft-quality printers for the mac

neruda@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (Steve Neruda) (09/06/88)

Is there an inexpensive wide column draft quality printer. We need to be
able to print mailing labels and would rather not buy an Imagewriter LQ
merely to print draft quality mailing labels. We need to be able to
print 132 columns wide (about 13'').

We have two TI omni 800 printers that we are presently using from our soon
to retire HP3000. Has anyone had any luck with getting one of these to
talk to a Mac? This would be the ideal solution. Would really appreciate any
 help.

Yes. Most software, including Word, Foxbase, and many DBMSs, work just fine
with Earle Horton's Daisy. Having obtained it just a little while ago, my
experience with it is still fresh: it saved my ass. If your printer speaks
anything resembling ascii, you should be just fine. If the printer is a
parallel device, you'll need a parallel <--> serial converter, which should
run you about $70 - $100 bucks. You'll need a tech type to figure out the
pinouts.

Some programs, like 4D, FoxBase V1.1, and Word, can speak to your
serial port directly. In that case you wouldn't even need Daisy. If your
application should somehow be incompatible with Daisy, you could just
dump everything to disk as a text file and print it via Word (gross, but
it'll work)...

Sun Remarketing (which sells used Apple computers, as well as new Lisas :-) ),
will sell you a wide-carriage Imagewriter I, according to some literature I
picked up at Boston. I don't have their address/phone here; send me mail if
you would like me to find it for you. For this printer, you don't need any
new printer drivers.
