[comp.sys.mac] KanjiTalk questions

pdanset@odin.wright.edu (Paul Danset) (09/07/88)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I am relatively new
to the net. I recently purchased KanjiTalk v.1.1 from APDA,
but it seems to have some compatibility problems with the Mac II.

o Is this the newest version of KanjiTalk? If not, what is the
current version, and where/how can I get it? Is the newest
version compatible with the Mac II (System 5.0 or later)?

o Does anyone have a list of software that support the Script
Manager? To what degree do the various software support it?
It would be nice to have a single word processor to enter and
   _edit_ text in various languages.

o Has anyone outside Japan been able to obtain the Kanji Font
ROM? Does Apple have a policy for purchasing this beast?

Please reply be email. Thanks very much in advance.

Does this make your Mac speak Japanese???

I have KanjiTalk 2.0 and it runs fine on the Mac II I have with 5MB of memory.
It is worth noting that since the Kanji ROM is not present all of the kanji
fonts have to at some time or other RAM resident and hence I would suspect that
the system wouldn't work well with only a 1MB machine. I purchased KanjiTalk
2.0 in Japan for about 7000 yen in Akihabara. It works fine with most programs
but not all. It allows romanji based input of characters to some programs.
There is also a package called Sweet-Jam available from some import house here
that allow japanese text to be input into american versions of programs under
KanjiTalk. I do not have this program however and read about it in a Japanese
Mac magazine call Mac Life.

This is true. Standard model of Mac is sold with 2MB memory.

There are some programs to help you to input Japanse which is a program called
Kana-Kanji conversion. I use Turbo-Jip myself and like it very much.

There are two other programs that you may note. They are Ninja-Term and KT
Enhacer. Former is a japanese terminal enulator and the latter is Kanji-Talk
enhancer which will speed up your Japanese processing programs. Both of them
are PDS and created by Ariza-san.
