If anyone knows of such an animal, would you please let me know. Thanks
very much in advance.

Depends on your local network setup, but if your IBM can do TCP/IP, and
you've got some sort of Appletalk gateway (e.g, Kinetics), then it sure
is hard to beat tn3270. It's a 3270 emulator built on top of the TCP/IP
kernal from NCSA. It's available by anonymous ftp from NCSA and/or brownvm.

The only one I'm sure of is MacTerminal from Apple. Though there are dim
memories of a reference to a MacIRMA. But then I don't do IBM...

From the back of my MacTerminal box "...can emulate IBM 3278, DEC VT100 and
VT52... for IBM 3270 communications, you'll need either AppleLine or an
Apple Cluster Controller." For grins, I've turned on the IBM mode, and you
get this funky pulldown keypad menu with 36 IBM function keys. As I don't
have an IBM to talk to, I can't comment on the quality of the emulation.
VT-100 emulation is excellent, but I've switched to Versaterm for various
other reasons.

I know nothing of the required (?) AppleLine or Cluster Controller. The
MacTerminal manual says you connect to this at 9600 bps with 7 bits/char, so
I'd guess EBCDIC <-> ASCII and possibly some other protocol conversion must
be done external to the Mac.

I'm unsure of the support status of MacTerminal. I don't believe it was
transferred to Claris. The last Apple update was about six months ago to fix
MultiFinder compatibility. Apple is somewhat committed to co-existance in
the IBM world, so I'd expect them to support MacTerminal. List price is
$125. I paid $100.

Want to give it a try? My copy (with box, manuals, blank registration card,
original disk, latest version) is yours for $49, UPSed anywhere in the US.

There is a program called TIN CAN available from YALE university that
will emulate a 3270 terminal. It includes a proprietary transfer
protocol which is available for IBM Mainframes for a modest fee.
Note: You can only connect via modem with TIN CAN. It is not a
substitute for a MACIRMA card. But it does work fairly well.

Nope. TinCan emulates a VT-100 (poorly). There is an IBM System-1
here at Yale that provides the 3270 gateway.

BTW, you don't need a modem. TinCan will talk to the serial port. We
have gandalf boxes at Yale that it was designed to work with.

You're right Joel. I should have said "Tin Can emulates an IBM 3270
KEYBOARD." The emulation itself is VT100.
