This morning I was carrying a Mac SE and an external Rodime 45+ disk from my home to my car when the buckle on the official Apple University Consortium carry bag gave way (it didn't break -- it just didn't hold!). From my hip to the ground (pure, lush concrete) is a good metre (40" if you prefer). The bag fell and the disk cushioned the fall of the Mac. Damage to Mac: apparently none, except for two broken keys on the keyboard which was in the outside pocket. Damage to disk: crack in plastic casing, two parts of the _steel_ frame bent, little plug from switch to power supply jumped out of its socket (easily put back!). Disk passed check with Disk First Aid no worries. I am _not_ planning to replicate this experiment, but I think I'm bloody lucky! (Well, actually my car's just blown a head gasket so I'm not _that_ lucky.) Because of the disk trouble, I had to give two lectures this morning virtually from memory because when I finished my notes (on the disk) I couldn't find my backup diskette, and it was getting late... Rodime disks are tough! As for AUC carry bags... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Strasser ACSnet, CSnet: strasser@murdu.oz Internet: strasser%murdu.oz@uunet.uu.net Forestry Section University of Melbourne Creswick, Victoria. 3363 Phone: (053) 45 2405 A u s t r a l i a +61 53 45 2405 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
