I apologize for asking the same question that has been asked before, but I'm in the market for an external hard disk drive for the SE and would like some opinions. At the moment I'm looking into three different drives: Microtech Nova 50 meg Currently on sale. Salesman claims their drive is rated in top 10% for speed, although admits access time is only 65 ms. But claims that just access time is not a good way to compare performance. One of the very nice features of this drive is a 5 year warranty. This drive was chosen by Dartmouth College for exclusive sale to students and staff. CMS 60 meg Uses a Seagate drive. Best feature: good price locally. 40 ms access time. 1 year warranty. Jasmine 45 meg Well known for providing good reliable drives. Comes with SUM and Redux backup software. 40 ms access time. 1 year warranty. As far as prices go, the drives are in the order CMS 60 < Microtech 50 < Jasmine 45 but there is only a $60 difference between the bottom and top prices (approximately in the mid $700 range). I would like very much to hear from anyone, either pro or con, regarding any of these three drives, or any other drives that might be recommended. Things I don't know about any of them are how compact they are, how good their drive software is, how noisy they might be. Perhaps replys by mail would be best, and I will summarize to the net. Thank you. -- Larry Riddle | riddle@mathcs.emory.edu PREFERRED Emory University | {decvax, gatech}!emory!riddle UUCP Dept of Math and CS | riddle@emory NON-DOMAIN BITNET Atlanta, GA 30322 | (404) 727-7922 AT&T
