[comp.sys.mac] MAC II vs IBM PS/2 model 70

ls1i+@andrew.cmu.edu (Leonard John Schultz) (09/02/88)

I am considering purchasing either an IBM model 70 or an Apple Mac II. I
would appreciate anyone`s opinions or advise on the subject. I consider the
two just about equal in graphics, memory, storage, speed, and cost at the CMU
computer store. I believe the 70 has more potential for the future considering
the raw power and multitasking abilities of OS/2. I also may run CADD systems.
What do you think?

                                                                           Len

Well, since you posted to comp.sys.mac, this reply is probably already biased,
right? :-) Since I noticed that you're using Andrew instead of any of the
TOPS-20 machines at Carnegie-Mellon, you may want to consider hooking into
Andrew from your dorm room (or the 96,000bps voice/data lines the phone
company there is using if you live off-campus). A Mac II, possibly running
MACH (see one of the recent MacWEEK's about MACH vs. BSD vs SYS V, etc),
will eventually be able to run Andrew's Window Manager. Unfortunately, I
have no idea what the timeframe for this will be. Before the SE was even
out (but darn close), the ITC was thinking/working on running a kind of
mini-Messages on the Macs... so I imagine that it can't be that far off.

Sure, IBM is the big name in Andrew, and there are RT's all over campus,
but is IBM going to get Andrew running on PS/2's? Probably not without some
version of UNIX, and they may in fact be doing this, but I haven't seen
about it yet. Has anyone else heard what's going on in this area?

Back to the 'thinking about' stage, even after some implementation efforts.

When I see an ITC person these days (I'm in Computer Science, and I don't even
track what they do), I say 'how about just getting a MacOS X11, so you don't
have to write any more software' Although copying text may be more efficient
than copying the font representation, do you REALLY want to write a Andrew
FileSystem client for the MacOS.

Anyway, no MacoS X11 seems to exist yet, even in beta form.
