In honor of Apple raising their prices to the roof, I give you the INSIDE poop on the new Mac IIX....while this won't steal too much thunder from the Apple marketing machine--anything that cuts them down a little only helps. David "Now a Mac II costs the same as a LISA did!" Williams 1984 :Macintosh, the computer for the rest of us. 1988 :Macintosh, the computer for the Fortune 500. *----------------------------------------------------------------------- o New Macintosh CPU Being Announced In the September edition of AppleGram, which is being sent to all Apple field personnel Monday, September 12, Apple will announce the introduction of its newest CPU, the Macintosh IIX. AppleGram will be delivered to customers September 19. Each Macintosh IIX includes the following features: # 1.4MB floppy disk drive (the Apple FDHD, or Floppy Disk, High Density), with the ability to read, write, and format MS-DOS diskettes. # 68030 microprocessor, with on-board data cache and Paged Memory Mangement Unit (PMMU). # 68882 math co-processor. # 4MB of RAM The Macintosh IIX will be available in September either as a floppy-based system (M5820) or with an internal 80MB hard drive (M5830). Pricing for the Macintosh IIX is not yet available. [Ed. note: they were probably trying to figure out how much to GOUGE us for.] Customer Communications will notify you of pricing as soon as it its confirmed. !!* NOTE: The September issue of AppleGram incorrectly states that Macintosh II owners who wish to upgrade their machines can order the IIX logic board at the time of introduction (September 19). The IIX logic board and the Apple FDHD 1.4MB floppy drive will NOT be available until later this year. We apologize for any inconvience this may cause you or your customers. Be sure to read the September issue of AppleGram for all the details on the Macintosh IIX. --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why isn't this in the new > products newsgroup ??? > >=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Please excuse me if I am way out of line here, but isn't this question from D. Quarles a bit "picky?" I don't have a policy statement in front of me regarding posting to "the new products newsgroup," nor to comp.sys.mac, but it seems to me that the article in question was a lot closer to "rumor" than to a formal product announcement (read press release) direct from the manufacturer. I for one sure find it interesting to read about speculation and rumors of new Macintosh products. It seems to me that this sort of thing has a place on comp.sys.mac. On the other hand, I would certainly advocate the placement of formal product announcements elsewhere. I'd rather not have to sift through a new product newsgroup to find the latest "gossip" about the Mac. Again, if I'm out of line, let me know and I'll shut up. I trust the same holds true for David Quarles.
