Does anyone know whether the new SuperMac tape backup drives (I think they're called DataStream drives) work with NON-SuperMac hard disks? I know the tape drives are being bundled with some of their high-end hard disks, but I haven't heard anything about their working with, say an internal Apple 40SC drive. Please e-mail responses directly to me; I'll summarize for the net. -- Mark H. The SuperMac tape drives are just fine, but I'll let Fabian tell you about their good qualities :-) One reminder, though- unless you need Apple tape drive compatability, the forty-meg tape drives are a bad choice. They are just an inferior technology to the 60 MB TEACs, and more expensive these days. Cartridge technology may have a great future, but you'll never be able to upgrade, so why buy it now? ---- Alexis Rosen {allegra,philabs,cmcl2}!phri\ Writing from {harpo,cmcl2}!cucard!dasys1!alexis The Big Electric Cat {portal,well,sun}!hoptoad/ Public UNIX Best path: uunet!dasys1!alexis

Mark, SuperMac's DataStream (a 3M DC2000 tape unit) can be purchased as a stand alone unit or in combination with a 60 Mb HD (XP60+40). Each unit comes with the "DataFrame-specific" ("df") version of DiskFit which is limited in its backup capabilities, but restores are non-specific. Included with our tape units is the DataStream INIT (current version is 2.02) that allows the DC2000 tape cartridge to be mounted on the desktop.
