[comp.sys.mac] Head-to-Head Falcon. It's Here!

kratz@dataspan.UUCP (Geoff Kratz) (09/27/88)

I just received the upgrade for Falcon, and it has the head-to-head option
in it. I did manage to find two macs, but I couldn't find anyone else
to fly the second bird. It was neat though, putting the one plane on a
straight line and then harassing it with the other. I'm looking forward
to getting into some good engagements with some friends.

You can fly it one of several ways: alone (usual MiG stuff), against
another Mac using AppleTalk, phone modems or connecting a ImageWriter II
printer cable directly from phone port to phone port, or against someone
with Falcon on the IBM.

Some things have changed on the plane. LCOS is no longer around. When
you turn off your radar, you no longer lock on. As well, at Captain or
higher, you are limited to 6 AIM-9J/L, rather than 8. The HUD and
aiming mechanisms have changed as well. The enclosed "poster" describes
all the changes and additions.

Yes, a friend of mine got his upgrade a while ago. I'm still waiting
for mine. We've played several times, although he's beaten me more
than I've beaten him. I generally like the improvements to the HUD's,
although I haven't really used the new radar mode yet.

I find that it's more interesting to play against a human rather than
just the computer. I think that I'm getting better, faster. What I'd
like to see is multiple F-16's teaming up on Mig's during missions.
It's already possible for one mac to handle an F-16 and two or three
Mig's, so this could all be done, speed wise at least, with one Mac
for each human player. Of course, this version would only work over
Appletalk...

I still have one gripe, though. On neither the Plus nor the SE will
Falcon run under system 6.x, although it will happily do so on a II.
The new documentation says this explicitly. Does anyone know the
reason _why_? Is this something that is unfixable? Please enlighten
me.

A few questions about the new Falcon...

How much network traffic does it produce? If two people are playing Falcon,
does anyone printing on a LaserWriter crawl?

How effective is it across a zone?

An earlier report said you can play against MS-DOS machines. Which version of
MS-DOS Falcon gives you this ability? That could become the ultimate
Macintosh vs. PC battle...
