This is a request to whomever is or is thinking of writing an HP DeskJet
driver for the Macintosh. (Sorry, I don't have the motivation nor time.)
1) Use the DeskJet's data compression ability. I assume you'll have to
build up and ship out a bit image of 300 dpi. Sending a page of these
bits over a 9600 serial line is going to take a long time. Also, try
to use as much Mac memory as possible to make this fast. There is a
way you can ask for temporary memory from the pool used by MultiFinder.
2) My DeskJet isn't going to be directly connected to my Macintosh. There
will be two workstations and a LAN in between (and maybe a modem).
So please have an option to redirect the output to a file. I'll then
figure out how to ship this file to the printer. Please note that
Apple's LaserWriter drivers have this option (hold down the freeway
interchange symbol with f or k as you click the OK button on the
print dialog and you'll get a PostScript0 file in your System Folder.)
Thanks,
Erik Kilk
