Is there a product available to allow occasional file and/or mail transfer between a Unix SysV R3 machine and an AppleTalk/PhoneNet MAC network using RS232 as a physical transport ? The primary purpose of this link would be to allow outputting of ASCII lp spooler files from the Unix system to the LaserWriter on the net. RS232 is desireable over Ethernet due to low cost and the relatively low usage. From a hardware standpoint, it appears that the Shiva NetSerial (RS232 to Appletalk) will satisfy the hardware requirements. . In addition, any mail/file transfer servers that would work in this environment would be useful. We have had great success connecting an AT&T 3B2 to a small Phonenet group of Macs including a Laserwriter. The output from the 3B2 which is mainly graphics output from the S statistical package goes to the laserwriter. The S package has special drivers for different output devices. The program used is called Gatepost and can be obtained from Paul Menon at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia (rcopm%yabbie.rmit.oz@uunet.uu.net - at least that was the address in September 1987). It is distributed freely as far as I can see. The disadvantage is that you have to dedicate a Mac to Gatepost. -- G A (Tony) Vignaux: Inst of Statistics and Operations Research Victoria University, P.O Box 600, Wellington, New Zealand. tel:(4)721-000,FAX:(4)712 070....
