At the Boston MacWorld Expo, those who attended the Database "Conference" were treated to a pathetic display of mutual backpatting and gladhanding by the various vendor reps on the panel. This wasn't all their fault-- the tone of the entire production was wimpy. Most of the time was spent on trivial matters, and there was no serious technical discussion at all. This so annoyed me that I determined to do it right at the next show. With a great deal of assistance from the show sponsors, MacUser magazine, I have organized a _real_ database conference at the Macintosh Business Conference and Exhibition. It is scheduled for November 1, 1988 (the first day of the show), and it will run for a respectable 3 1/2 hours, in the keynote auditorium. We will have high-level _technically capable_ people from Odesta, Fox Software, Oracle, Informix, and Blyth. We will also have Wayne Ratliff and Bob Byers, who wrote dBase and Emerald Bay, and are now in the process of writing Emerald Bay for the Mac. We may or may not have someone from Acius. In the three and a half hours, we will try to cover three major topics: 1) The features and flaws of currently available Mac Databases 2) What's coming in the near future- technologies and products 3) Techniques for obtaining optimal performance from Mac DBMSs Some of the vendors will be demonstrating new technology that is currently being worked on, and we will have at least 45 minutes for questions from the audience. This will be a fairly technical conference, but just how technical we get will depend on the attendees. I will post a more detailed agenda and a list of the panel members in a few days. There is no additional fee for the conference above the cost of admission to the Exhibition. If you have any questions, send email. I always answer mail within a day or two, so if you don't get any response try a different mail path... ---- Alexis Rosen {allegra,philabs,cmcl2}!phri\ Writing from {harpo,cmcl2}!cucard!dasys1!alexis The Big Electric Cat {portal,well,sun}!hoptoad/ Public UNIX Best path: uunet!dasys1!alexis

Would it be safe to assume that you'll post (in great detail) anything signi-
ficant that comes out of this conference for those of us not fortunate enough
to attend? I can't afford to go (although more because of TIME than money)...
It would be great if you can tell us all about it afterwards!
