Friends, it has become apparent to me that the items I keep in the FTP-archives on RASCAL in the subdirectory "virus-tools" are not as complete a collection as people "in need" may wish; and as it seems the archive has become better known and quite a few people try to use it (I get quite a few requests for more info or help than I have available) it would be nice if you folks out there could help me complete the collection of tools and helpful "how-to" articles (and pointers to such articles in print) and to keep them up-to-date. Please realize, that I am neither particularly interested in viruses nor do I have much time or any obligations to keep FTPable archives, I just do it because I believe in sharing information and because noone else seemed to collect this info in one place.... I, therefore, decided that I should make a (modest) effort to try and complete the online collection of virus-information - and I would like to request your cooperation for that!!! A little history first: Sometimes in April '88, I started to save some interesting articles floating by on USENET concerning the SCORES-virus to have the info conveniently available "just in case". But as I was neither really worried about dealing with a virus (should I have to) and as I knew that all the old, posted information was just an FTP away from me on SIMTEL or SUMEX, I was not very diligent in collecting articles ... ...nor did I try to retrieve the ones I had already seen go by before (not to speak of extracting the ones in the DELPHI or INFO-MAC digests) At a later point in time, I thought it would be useful to the net if I'd create a FTP-archive with a collection of virus fighting tools and information about virus-fighting in general. For reasons described above, I have only few news-articles now, practically all addressing the SCORES virus (but I get a lot of questions on nVir, lately, as there seems to be a new, more dangerous strain, if I believe the voices of desperation reaching me ...:-) and I would like to invite you folks out there to let me know what else you have (or simply to send it to me) so I can integrate it in to the collection. Here is a list of headers of the articles currently available in RASCALs FTP-archive ~ftp/mac/virus-tools under filename virus-news.mainly-SCORES ( a new file-name, result of my just finished review of the situation ) MM>h a K 1) 13-Apr Jim Macak "SCORES" virus (13498 chars) K 2) 13-Apr Jim Macak Re: "SCORES" virus (9835 chars) 3) 18-Apr Phil Draughon ( The Scores Virus (10555 chars) U 4) 25-Apr Phil Draughon ( Scores Virus Report 2 (6416 chars) U 5) 26-Apr ephraim vishnia Re: Scores Virus Report 2 (2115 chars) 6) 29-Apr Joel B Levin Vaccine: what can trigger it (1446 chars) U 7) 2-May Phil Draughon ( Scores Report 3 (3696 chars) I'd expect that others may have kept a more complete collection of articles; please take a moment and send to me what you have; below, I enclose a directory listing of virus-tools; I understand that some of the software should be replace by later versions; again, I plead for submissions of updates; BTW, anything mailed to me gets also forwarded to the archives at SIMTEL20 and SUMEX, and to the comp.binaries.mac moderator... werner on rascal <148> l Antipan_APPL.sit_hqx Vaccination_1pt0_APPL.pit_hqx.Z Ferret-1pt0_APPL.sit_hqx.Z Vaccine_CDEV.Hqx.Z Guard_Dog_CDEV.sit_hqx.Z VirusDetective-DA_1pt2.Hqx.Z Interferon-2pt0_APPL.pit_hqx.Z VirusRx-1pt02a_APPL.sit_hqx.Z KillScores_1pt0_APPL.hqx.Z VirusWarningINIT.hqx.Z KillVirus_INIT.Urlichs.Z virus-news.mainly-SCORES PS: please note that file-names ending in .Z indicate compressed files which can be FTPed only with a 8-bit (binary) connection. -- --------------------> PREFERED-RETURN-ADDRESS-FOLLOWS <--------------------- (ARPA) werner@rascal.ics.utexas.edu (Internet: 128.83.144.1) (INTERNET) werner%rascal.ics.utexas.edu@cs.utexas.edu (UUCP) ..!utastro!werner or ..!uunet!rascal.ics.utexas.edu!werner
