A friend of mine has two (practically new) Macintosh XLs that he's selling. For those of you who don't know, the XL is a reconfigured Lisa. With the software package MacWorks Plus from Sun Remarketing, the XL runs nearly all the software a Macintosh Plus runs (including Multifinder). The XLs he's selling have: 1) 1 Meg of memory. 2) Much larger screen that a Macintosh Plus. 3) 5 Meg Profile Hard Disk. 4) 400K floppy (Sun Remarketing has a good deal on 800K disk upgrade + MacWorks Plus) 5) Two serial ports. 6) Mouse and Keyboard. 7) Expansion bus with three slots. Unlike the Mac it's cheap and easy to add more parallel or serial ports. 8) Active hardware and software support by a third party vendor. There are several curious features in an XL including a thorough diagnostic software system in ROM, the ability to turn itself off (I have heard that it can also turn itself on), and the ability to be disassembled and reassembled completely by hand (no tools required). I have had a Mac XL for three years and have yet to find a reason to buy a Macintosh Plus or SE. Asking price is $800 each.
