[comp.sys.mac] Word 3.01 help - footnote numbering

levin@bbn.com (Joel B Levin) (10/28/88)

If I ask for all the footnotes in a document to go at the end of the
section or document (it's basically a one section, one file paper),
they are numbered consecutively 1 - n.

If I ask for all the footnotes to go at the bottoms of their pages,
they are renumbered from 1 on every page.

Does anyone know a way to get 1 - n numbering throughout the section
or document while having the footnotes appear at the bottoms of their
respective pages? I have RTMF, or at least looked up Footnotes in it.
But one never knows when there might be some secret way to do
something interesting like this.

BTW: I am NOT interested in answers like "Fullwrite Pro does this". I
am slightly more interested in answsers like "Word 4.0 will do this";
but I'd really like to do it today, not next year.

How about "Word 3.01 does this"?

Look in the page setup dialog at the entry "Restart numbering." If this is
clicked numbering restarts at 1 at the beginning of each unit clicked in the
"Footnotes at" entry above it. That is, if you have footnotes at each page,
they are restarted at 1 on each page, and the same for sections. If you
unclick it, they will be numbered consecutively in consecutive pages or
sections.

Isn't it just turning off "Restart Numbering" in the "Page Setup" menu
item? (Don't ask me why it's there, rather than in the Section
command).

Hope this help,

Thanks to three correspondents, the question is answered. The
"restart numbering" checkbox in the Page Setup dialog controls whether
footnotes are renumbered on each page. I didn't RTFM in the right
place, I guess.
