I installed 6.0.2 on a Mac+ a couple of weeks ago. I used the special minimal
macintosh plus installation script and used ResEdit to add the snd resources and
PACK 12. I then used F/DA Mover to install all my normal DA's and FONTs, and
dragged the imagewriter file, and the Map and Sound CDEV's into the system
folder. Finally, I added Multifinder, DA handler, Key Caps, MacroMaker, and my
other INITs to the system folder. Everything worked fine until I tried to print
with MacPaint, MacWrite, or MacDraw. I was informed that I either didn't have
a printer resource file on my startup disk (False) or that I hadn't used Chooser
to choose a printer (True, I have never used chooser as I have a lowly
Imagewriter I connected directly to my printer port and have never needed to
use chooser before).
So, I used the F/DA mover to install the new version of chooser.... which won't
run. I get a flicker of the led on my disk but nothing else happens. OK, so
now I decide to run the regular macintosh plus installation script from the
System Tools disk. After removing the extra crap it installs in the system
folder for me AND using ResEdit to fix my finder layout (AGAIN), I am STILL
unable to print. Now I use Chooser (still in my system file), choose my
solitary imagewriter, "connect" it to the printer port, ...... and printing
works fine.
What's going on here??? My system file is now ~100K bigger than my fully loaded
"minimal" system. I haven't tried to print again since shutting down the mac
so I don't know if I need to use Chooser again (every time I reboot?) and one
of my precious DA slots is taken by a DA I shouldn't need.
To summarize, could new systems please be released with a list of resources
that come in the system file and a description of what those resources are
needed for or used by. I would even settle for a tech note or somesuch with
that description. Maybe I'm unique but I would sure like to know what I can
remove from my system file without shooting myself in the foot. At this point,
I cannot maintain an 800K backup system disk, even if I only have the system
file and finder on it.
