[comp.sys.mac] FullWrite and System 6.0.2

egv@aicchi.UUCP (Eric Vann ) (10/28/88)

Has anyone else using FullWrite noticed that after installing the newest
system (Version 6.0.2), that suddenly you can no longer double-click on
FullWrite documents and open them directly via the desktop?

That's a known problem -- registered users should have gotten a fix for this
by now (I did weeks and weeks ago).

The fix is actually pretty simple. The bundle bit was inadvertantly set on
the Dictionary and Thesaurus files. Use Resedit, Disktop, etc.... to turn
it off, then rebuild the desktop.

Yes, several of the supplementary FullWrite file (the Thesaurus and the
dictionary, I think) have one of their Finder attributes (namely, the
Bundle bit) turned on by mistake. This make the Finder think that the
Thesaurus is the application to launch rather than the real FullWrite,
but since the Thesaurus isn't an application, nothing happens.

Previous versions of the system have had a hack in them to prevent this
misinterpretation, but system 6.0.x no longer has this, I guess to force
everyone to clean up their act.

You should have gotten an update disk from Ashton Tate (I did) that has new
copies of the files (no other changes that I know of). Or if you ar a hacker,
you can turn off the bundle bit using such things as ResEdit, DiskTop or
Set File.

I haven't had that problem on any of my Macs. It sounds like the old "bundle
bit set in the Dictionary and/or Thesaurus" bug. Make sure that those files
do NOT have their bundle bits set, reboot and try again. All should be well
at that point. Ashton-Tate sent out a blurb to registered owners about this
problem a few months back. You would have seen this behavior under 6.0 as
well since that was when Apple introduced the change in the way bundles
were handled in the DeskTop.

Timing is a wonderful thing, A-T shipped FullWrite and then, about a month
later Apple shipped a new System that showed a glitch in the behavior of
the Thesaurus/Dictionary that had been licensed from Microlytics.

This problem has to do with the bundle bit being set on the dictionary and
thesaurus files. If you look at a "BY NAME" view of your files, you'll see
that the Mac thinks they're all dictionary documents. Some simple fixes -

	1. Install the upgraded dictionary and thesaurus that you got in
the mail from Ashton-Tate a while ago
	2. Use something like DiskTools to unset the bundle bit on
the dictionary and the thesaurus
	3. Put all your FW files in one folder

Any of these will work, though #3 is a bit of a kludge. I did #2 long
before I got the upgrades from A-T. Worked like a charm...
