[comp.sys.mac] Cognition Tech Inc??

twakeman@hpcea.CE.HP.COM (Teriann Wakeman) (11/04/88)

Anyone heard anything about how Cognition Technology Corp. is doing
these days. Last summer, I revieved a flyer about MacSmarts Professional
{its been a while so I may have gotten the name wrong} which is supposed to
have several extensions and capabilities that MacSmarts does not provide.
There was a limited time offer for an $85 upgrade for registared users.

I sent my money in late July & the check was cashed in August. I have not
seen or heard anything from them since then. I called their number this
morning and got an answering machine. There has been no return call today.

Since the number is still connected I assume that Cognition Technology
still exists. Is that a safe assumption? Anyone get an upgrade? or the
new product?? Anyone know anything about the company???

I, too, have had problems with Cognition Technology Corp. Actually I've
had NOTHING but problems going back 17 months. They cashed checks w/o sending
software and did not live up to their stated money back guarantee. I am
giving them until December 17 to finally come to their senses and live up to
their promises, but I have little faith that they will. I've sent them 4 or
5 letters and called/left msgs numerous times w/o a response back from them
yet.

Hi,
I'm trying to find some information for a usergroup newsletter article.
What I need to know is which Mac software (and hardware for that matter)
have education discounts on their products and what these discounts are.
Please send me email and I will summarize so everyone who is a student or
university member can get such discounts. Thanks a lot!

Ray, What prey tell are you planing to do on or after Dec 17. If it has to
do with getting either product or money back, I would be interested in getting
involved.

I just called Computerware. They are still carrying MacSmarts & haven't
heard of any problems with the company. 3.02 is the current version that
they have. Version 3.2 was due to replace 3.02 last week but has not yet
arrived.

I found my letter. It is dated 15 July. It mentions MacSmarts Professional
in the present tense, representing it as a new EXISTING product. This
was done using phrases like : MacSmarts Professional has successfully met",
"..number of key features have been implemented".

By the way, the key features mentioned were:
* Four function arithmetic operations & logical comparisons on named
  variables.

* Report generating capability with mixed text & graphics.

* Printing capability for all displayed documents.

* Form completion by rules with laser printing.

* Colour support for documents.

* Backtrack button to allow users to remake choices.

* Customizable hypertext front end with multilevel links.

MacSmarts professional does NOT as of 9 Nov 88 exist on Computerware's database.

The upgrade from MacSmarts vers 3 to MacSmarts Professional was $75 + $10
shipping. The retail was listed as $495.

The last line on the upgrade notice was "We are always glad to answer technical
or implementation questions by telephone."

So... They cashed my check in Aug and have not answered their phone.

I just finally got through to Cognition Tech. & was able to talk to someone.
They are starting to ship vers 3.2 & MacSmarts professional is slated to
start shipping in about three weeks. The reason I was given for the slip
in the ship date of MacSmarts Professional was two fold. 1) A beta user
found a fatal bug near the end of Beta testing, & 2) It broke under sys 6.
These problems have reportably been fixed & it is slated to be sent out
after the MacSmarts vers 3.2 is shipped.

Being a small operation on a limited buget, there has been no one in the office
to answer the phone for several weeks {!!!!}. The person I talked to just
started working in the office.

So... Ray, you might try calling again. Or if you are waiting for vers 3.2,
you should see it'real soon now'. If you are, like me waiting for MacSmarts
Pro. it may be closer to the end of the year given the heavy mail overload
that occures between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
