We've been getting some odd behavior from one of our Hayes Interbridges. I'm curious if anybody else has seen anything like it. Our network here at work consists of a backbone zone ("Bridge") with six other zones connected to it via Hayes Interbridges. Our AppleShare and QuickMail servers are in the Bridge zone. The problem is that every couple of days, one of the bridges decides that it needs to talk to the QuickMail server. It starts sending lots of RTMP packets to the server. So many in fact that it brings the server to it's knees and QuickMail no longer functions. We've tried restarting the bridge from software and powering it off and on. Doing this several times will sometimes work, but not usually. The only (but not optimal) way we've been able to get around the problem is to use NodeHint (from Farallon) to change the servers node number and just let the bridge pound on the old non-existent node. If anybody has an explantion for this, based on fact or speculation, I'd be interested in hearing it. BTW, we would never have been able to discover the cause of our problems without TrafficWatch from Farallon. It's an excellent tool for network management, and has already paid for itself. (My only association with Farallon is as a happy customer.) -Paul Wenker prw@meccsd.MECC.MN.ORG -MECC, Technical Services
