OK, here's a simple question. Do CDEVs like Vaccine work when they are installed on a hard disk that has no Control Panel installed? Since Vaccine's icon shows up at boot time, I assume that it's running. But with no Control Panel present I can't double check. I'd rather not install it, either, 'cause it's just another thing for our Mac lab users to fool around with and cause me headaches! You just won't be able to configure them. If you are short of space, you could probably delete the cdev, mach, nrct resources also, but be careful. This will make it smaller, but the control panel will not be able to access it forever. john

Vaccine (and many others) are actually INITs, with a 'cdev' interface for setting parameters. Once you've set the parameters the way you want them, you can blow away the Control Panel DA and they will continue to load at boot time in the normal way. -- ========== ....... =========================================== Ken McLeod :. .: uucp: {spsd, zardoz, felix}!dhw68k!thecloud ========== :::.. ..::: InterNet: thecloud@dhw68k.cts.com //// ===========================================

Yes, CDEVs do work without the control panel. I have a setup on our public hard disks (for laser printing) with Vaccine, Moire, (and GuardDog for a while). All of them work fine and are protected from prying users, malicious or otherwise. Adam

At school I have installed on several Macs Quickeys and (in system 4.2) made it invisible and removed the control pannel after I configured Quickeys. This allowed me to then make all of the applications on the hard drives invisible. This was a great boon since what you can't see you can't delete or copy and all that good such (unless you know how, and that is not the case at this stage in the game, it is a closely guarded secret. In fact, to my knowledge the files are still on one drive and I am the only one who knows about them...) and all we do is have a command-shift list next to the computer saying that if you want to use MacWrite hit this and if you want to use that hit this sequence and it all works quite well. So I can say truthfully that Quickeys and General and Mouse and Keyboard will all work without the Control Pannel being installed. Hope this helps answer your question. Mark Cookson

What this boils down to is that any Init/cdev/rdev, etc. in the System Folder which is invisable will NOT be recognized by the INIT31 (Init Loader) mechinism and so will not be loaded. Just wanted to point this out before people started trying it with System 6.0.x and wondered why it didn't work!! /* ============================================================ */ /* Leonard Rosenthol | GEnie: MACgician */ /* President, Lazerware inc. | Delphi: MACgician */ /* | MacNet: MACgician */ /* denn@violet.berkeley.edu | AppleLink: D0025 */

Yes, I know that, that is why I stated that it was on System 4.2 so you would know that I knew what I was talking about. In System 6.0.2 enviroments I hide the icons behind other icons. Mark Cookson
