I'm a new owner of Jasmine DirectDrive 140. At first, I formatted it using DriveWare. Then I reformatted using Rodime Driver Utility 2.03 which supports real partitioning. I noticed that DriveWare's interleave ratio is 2:1, and Rodime's recommendation is 1:1 for MAC II. Both formattings works correctly, but 1:1 formatting is faster than 2:1 by DiskTimer. Can I use 1:1 formatting ? Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance. -------------- Masao Kato (kato@eecs.nwu.edu)

Masao and I are about 100 yards away from each other physically, and we use an enormous, international network to communicate. Of course, we've never actually met... The interleave for the drive depends on the Mac you have - you seem to have a Mac II, in which case you should use 1:1 interweave. I also own a Jasmine DirectDrive 140 and like it very much (have had it for 3 months). I have version 1.9 (or something like that) of Jasmine's DriveWare. Two things I would like to point out, Jasmine's Driveware is faster than Rodime's, and it also supports REAL (read bootable) SCSI partitions. Not to mention the fact that it was made for your drive. I have not used Rodime's driver for anything more than speed comparison so I don't know how it rates in the long run, but I much perfer Jasmine's. Also, all DirectDrives are to be formatted at 1:1 since they have a cache and they are plug and go on a Plus (what I have) an SE or a II. I would put the drive back to 1:1 if you put it on 2:1 since that was not how it was written to run. Other than that you should enjoy the drive. Let me know what you think of the drive and using the Rodime driver. Mark Cookson

Unfortunately, there is a way to tell which Rodimes were sold to Jasmine, and Jasmine DriveWare will only recognize Jasmine drives. My Rodime 2.03 partitions are no less REAL than yours, even if they aren't bootable. Just try getting SUM to recognize mine or yours. Finally, I would look twice at that cache you are so proud of. Where in your manual does it say you have a cache? Where in their advertising does it mention a cache? As far as I can tell it was dropped when they switched to the plastic-cased drives. If I am wrong, please e-mail me, though (I don't like being wrong twice). I also know that Rodime is hard at work on a new driver (3.0) which allows selection of a boot partition. >Unfortunately, there is a way to tell which >Rodimes were sold to Jasmine, and Jasmine DriveWare will only recognize >Jasmine drives. Not only that, but much to my dismay, the DriveWare stuff recognizes the difference between new and old Jasmine drives, and only works on the newer ones. Having just bought a Jasmine with the DriveWare, I went to update and reformat my older Jasmine with it as well, since I want both machines to be clones of each other as far as the basic system is converned. Much to my dismay, DriveWare won't talk to it. So I'm forced to run two different versions of the drivers and support software, even though they're both Jasmines. It's the first thing Jasmine has ever done to make me not happy with them. Like foo. It's not a major problem, by any means, but a hassle and an inconvenience. A Jasmine is a Jasmine is a Jasmine. Except when it's an old one. Not nice, Jasmine. Chuq Von Rospach Editor/Publisher, OtherRealms chuq@sun.COM It's not justice you want, Roderick! It's blood!

It may not have a large cashe in it, but most of the controlers I have come across lately have at least a small one in them.... Mark Cookson
