[comp.sys.mac] Sun Remarketing: The Lisa Revisited

earhard@dalcsug.UUCP (Mark Earhard) (11/09/88)

I am a lowely student who is hunting for a Mac.

Unfortunatly, due to the rather destructive pricing, an SE is out of reach
and a Plus is pushing it (without a hard drive even).

My question is this: I saw, while salivating over a MacUser Mag, an add
for SUN Remarketing Inc. What they do is recondition the Lisa's, and add
a software program that turns the useless Lisa into a low cost Mac Plus.

Besides all the warnings about hybread machines I was wondering if anyone
actualy OWNS one of these beasts. Sun seems to be quite pleased with them,
but we've all got a horror storry or two.

Before I go and dump $1700 into one of these beasts with a 40 meg HD, 800k
floppie, and 12 inch screan (much better than the Mac's 9 inch from what
I can tell (I've worked but briefly on a Lisa before).

There are two problems that I can see:

a: The sound circutry isn't the same as the plus. "If the program adheres
to programming standards there should be no problem, but if it makes
direct calls it might cause some problems," says Sun.

Just how often can I expect the thing to choke? Will the Talking Moose
send it into computer apaplexy?

B: it only runs at 5 mhz vrs the plus' 7.6 *I guess, please correct me*
though screen redraw is about the same. I'm doing 80% word processing,
10% freform design *macdraw* and 10% games.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone might have... any warnings?

Another one!

A friend of mine is using an old version and it seems to work ok (email me for more info). But a lot of the dirty software doesn't work.

I think the latter will be very difficult! But the rest should work allright.
You really do not need a superfast system for wordprocessing (me thinks), but I'm working on a MAC ED with two floppies and that eats lot's of disk IO time!
