Better yet, get the new MultiFinder that comes with MPW 3.0 (the beta
version is already available from APDA). This has application names at the
top of the apple menu, and also includes a "Set Aside" option to set
aside unused layers to reduce screen clutter.

Is there any way to get the new MultiFinder without getting MPW 3.0? (I assume
the "beta version" you refer to is the beta of MPW 3.0, not the beta of the new
MultiFinder).

Better yet, could you post it? I'm sure that everyone would love to
use it. That would be great to be able to set aside all other layers so you
can put things in the trash without moving dozens of windows.

It would also be nice to be able to flag a particular application to
automatically put aside other layers when selected. This would be a good
feature for applications that put icons on the desktop (outside windows),
such as Finder.

I'll check on this, but I doubt Apple'll allow it. However, there's no way
I can stop someone who has bought it from APDA from posting it. This really is
a nicer version than previous releases. Especially because its nicest
features are still hidden, waiting for supplementary system software.

This is possible already. Simply hold down the option key to set aside all
but the top layer.

Also, try clicking in the menu bar icon to set aside the layer being switched
out of. This gives a very convenient one-at-a-time effect.

Such as?? All further hints welcome.

One thing I tried which didn't seem to work is to do 'Set Aside XYZ',
then 'Set Startup', attempting to get an application running but set aside
at startup. This would be very useful in some circumstances - I was trying
to use it for SADE; the startup set was MPW, SADE and the Alarm Clock,
with SADE set aside.
