I recently created a document with footnotes and leter wanted to change the style in which the footnotes appear. I dutifully followed the advice in the manual (and help screens) and modified the style 'footnote-text' and 'footnote-reference'. The footnotes already entered DID NOT change their style, only new footnotes changed. Does anyone know how to do what I am trying to do or if this has been fixed in word 4.0? The explanation that the footnote reference style affects only newly created footnote references is correct and it is still valid for the versions of 4.0 that I have seen. I would guess there will be no change in this area unless a "character style" is added to Mac Word (PC Word has such a feature). As it stands styles affect entire paragraphs. You cannot select characters within a paragraph and apply a style just to them. Once you realize this, it is obvious that the footnote reference style cannot work like other styles do. I assume that the footnote reference style is read and the formatting is applied directly to the footnote reference when it is created. You can fairly quickly change the formatting for all footnote references by converting the file to Rich Text Format (RTF) and editting the RTF version and then reading the RTF back in to convert back to normal WYSIWYG Word format. RTF is fairly straightforward and creating a few very simple files should illustrate enough of the format to allow you to deduce what to do. I wish I could take credit for this approach which is useful for a lot of sticky little problems but someone else, whose name I do not know, posted this idea a while back. A salute to this unsung hero!
