[comp.sys.mac] Mac compatible laser printer query

weinhous@dinorah.wustl.edu (Martin S. Weinhous) (11/26/88)

We are considering the purchase of a laser printer for use with Mac SEs
and Mac IIs over Appletalk/Localtalk (there is a possibility that a
simple serial connection will be used instead). If anyone has accomplished
this with a laser printer other than those made by Apple, we would greatly
appreciate hearing of your experience.

Thanks. Marty Weinhous

Well, of course there is the QMS line. I use the 810 and like it, but it is
more expensive than the LaserWriter II NT. However, it has more features:

The processor speed is close to that of the NTx, it has HP emulation, and
it has a variety of ports (I think it would have anything you need, but I
don't have the book here at work.)

QMS advertises in MacUser and MacWorld I believe. You could look up their
800 number.

By the way, we're having a lot of trouble with bad print quality on the
II NTx at work. Most of the time the edges are grey. At other times the
print quality is broken up. It may (probably doesn't) not have anything to
do with the printer itself. It may just be the toner cartridges.

The QMS PS810 is an HP II look alike, only without the control panel. My
dealer didn't know anything about the Mac, so I never did get any software
(e.g. fonts) with it. But I just used the LaserWriter fonts.
