[comp.sys.mac] Midi and such

gregwong@maui.cs.ucla.edu (Greg Wong) (12/05/88)

Hello. I was wondering if anyone can provide me with or direct me
to info about Macs and Midi synthesizers.

First, let me give you my background. I'm an amateur composer of
mostly classical music. I use programs like Studio Session to hear
my work. I can not play keyboards. A friend of mine suggested that
I look into midi synthesizers. Recently, I saw a listing in the
MacWarehouse catalog for Mac Jr. Pac published by Passport. It includes
some software for composing music as well as a MIDI interface.

Here are my questions. If I get into MIDI, what role does my Mac play?
Does the Mac produce the sounds or are the sounds produced by the
sythesizer? I don't play keyboards -- will I still benefit from going
to MIDI or is Studio Session good enough? Does anyone have any opionions
on the software+midi package I described above? Can I get more realistic
sounds (like brass, woodwinds, and strings) using MIDI? What kind
of synthesizer do you recommend and how much do they cost?

I know I've asked a lot of questions here. Please feel free to jump
in and answer any size subset. I don't normally subscribe to this
newsgroup, so please send your responses via e-mail. Thank you.
