Based upon my question asking for a tool to recover files from disk where the files were deleted, disks damaged, etc. several people replied, with great enthusiasm, suggesting Symantec's Utilities (SUM) to solve their problems. In addition, Apple's Disk First Aid was recommended, as a first swag at disk repair, but only for dammaged directories and minor problems. MacTools was also mentioned, but the preference seemed to be with SUM due to ease of use. Thanks for the input, I'll have to run out and buy a copy. PCM.
