[comp.sys.mac] WriteNow 2.0 Is Here

shiffman%basselope@Sun.COM (Hank Shiffman) (11/30/88)

Just received my update today. After trying it out for a few minutes
I have to say that I'm impressed. The translator is now built in and
is extensible with autoloaded filter programs. It supports conversion
to and from straight text, MacWrite and Microsoft's RTF format.
Translation appears to be pretty fast. Certainly much faster than the
one included with 1.0.

I like the new features. Most everything seems well thought out.
About the only thing I particularly miss is the ability to specify
spacing around paragraphs. It's a pain to have to insert empty
paragraphs and then adjust their line spacing.

Mine hasn't arrived yet. Does it allow collated printing so that the
last page prints first as MacWrite does? And has the Speller been
improved to permit changing a word without clicking back into the
text and then returning to spelling or to substitute a dictionary
spelling? Those are two annoying features of 1.0.

Yes, the Page Setup box lets you select collating order as well as printing
odd or even pages only (very helpful if you intend to print on both sides
of the paper)

Some other thoughts on WriteNow 2.0

	* I LOVE IT
	* Has an option to hide pasted pictures, this greatly increases
the already speed of scrolling (even though it's pretty fast
	  anyway)
	* Mac II owners should try to set their monitors to 2-bit mode.
	  Scrolling absolutely screams!
	* Anyone read the 12/4 S.F. Examiner. My god, even Dvorak likes it!
	* It only takes a 400K MF partition (smaller if you use the smaller
	  dictionary)

All in all, I'm very impressed. Having just dumped FullWrite for the same
reasons Chuq outlined about a month ago, seeing the upgrade package from
T/Maker was a sign from heaven. I strongly recommend it, especially for
people without hard disks. As you probably know, MS Word is a bitch to use
without a hard disk.

Complaints? I wish it had a thesaurus (sp?) , but I can always use Word Finder.
I sometimes wish it had some of Word's "power" features like style sheets, but
then I just remember that I've never gotten style sheets to work correctly and
how much swearing under by breath Word has caused me, and go on.
