I may be paranoid, but... I recently downloaded Interferon 3.0 from the local InfoMac BBS. Upon examining it with ResEdit, i found a resource called =VIR (actually it was an equal sign with a slash through it rather than a '=' but the not-equal character is not part of standard ASCII). Anyway, I did an open general on that sucker and found a message "...interferon application 2.1" My question is, what is the purpose of that resource, and why does it say interferon version 2.1 when it's supposed to be 3.0???? Inquiring minds want to know. That's just the signature resource for the application. I gather it is supposed to mean "no viruses" or "anti-virus". Anyway, if you do a get info (within resedit) on Interferon you will notice that the =VIR string is the creator string for the application. It probably never got changed when the author upgraded from version 2.1 to version 3.0 - an easy thing to forget. Nothing to worry about, this time... Wade Blomgren wade@sdacs.ucsd.edu

I ran Interferon 3.0 on a system at work and discovered several Type 103 Anomalies. Neither the initial Interferon display nor the documentation (for Interferon 1.4) explains what a Type 103 Anomaly is. Are they serious or contagious? Should I panic? What's going on here? Interferon actually means "Type 203 Anomaly", which translates to "CODE resource found in non-application file". This message often appears with compiler libraries, as they usually contain CODE resource, but have a custom file type. I have also noticed this in Lightspeed Pascal/C project files and DA Handler. If the file Interferon shouted about doesn't fit in the cases I just described, check if there is a plausible reason for the CODE resource to exist. If not, drop me a note. -- Danny Schwendener +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Mail : Danny Schwendener, ETH Macintosh Support | | Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, CH-8092 Zuerich | | Bitnet : macman@czheth5a UUCP : {cernvax, mcvax}ethz!macman | | Internet: macman@ifi.ethz.ch Voice : yodel three times | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
