Recently one of our Macintosh labs was hit bad by the Scores virus. The person in charge of that lab immediately used Ferret to get rid of it and we check peoples disks for them before they use the machines. But when cleaning off one of our Macintoshs connected to a LaserWriter, not only was Scores present but an INIT 17 (marked "DEADLY" by Virus Rx) was detected. Just what does INIT 17 do? And how does it spread? It seems to only hitch a ride on Systems and not applications. I also had a virus turn my NotePad file into an init. When I used ResEdit and MacTools on it to delete it, I couldnt (error -43 in ResEdit but the file isnt locked or protected in any way). When I tried to set all the protection bits then reset them with MacTools, my system hung. Any ideas on how to get rid of the little pest? INIT 17 is part of Scores, and you want to get rid of it. There's a known bug in Ferret 1.1 - it fails to delete this resource. I recommend using KillScores, which doesn't have this bug, and which avoids some other bugs in Ferret. You can get KillScores most places you can get Ferret. I know for sure that it's available via anonymous FTP from rascal.ics.utexas.edu. Hope this helps.
