[comp.sys.mac] Charging for network laser usage

ccbjs@nt.sait.edu.au (12/08/88)

We have a pool of 20 Mac Pluses, two file servers and 2 ImageWriter IIs
on PhoneNet. The pool is used for classes and tutorials, and is open for
general use when these are not in progress.

We would like to add a LaserWriter IINT to the pool (we already have the NT,
so please dont suggest a LaserWriter SC), but need to be able to recover
all the costs (paper, toner, depreciation etc). We can do this by
adding a plastic card based device to the LaserWriter (commonly called
a Resource Card). However, there is a problem charging for a network service
on AppleTalk, the charging device can not identify when one persons job
ends and the next one starts.

We are limited to solutions that do not involving modifying the charging
device, Possible solutions we came up with are:

1. Connect the LaserWriter to the serial port of one particular
Mac, and find a version of the LaserWriter driver that prints through
        the serial line.

2. Buy another Mac with a duplicate set of software on the network
        and charge double per page!

Anyone got any better ideas ?
What do other people do in a similar situation?
I have heard of a serial LaserWriter driver, but have had no luck locating
one, can anyone help ?

Thanks in advance,
