[comp.sys.mac] News and mail software for Macintosh

domo@riddle.UUCP (Dominic Dunlop) (12/09/88)

First, the usual apologies if this matter has been dicussed on the net
recently. If it has, I'm afraid I missed it.

Second, my problem: I'm getting a Mac for home, and I want it to be able to
dial up the UNIX mail server at the office, and download mail and news in
subscribed-to groups. I suppose I could have rn mail those postings to me,
if that helps in a solution. What Mac software (I won't be running A/UX.
Well, not yet, anyway. Hell, I get enough of this UNIX stuff at work
already) is there to help me do what I want? I specifically need the Mac
to dial up the office automatically without the need for my intervention;
a system where the Mac must be online to the office as I read is not
acceptable. If the system were flexible enough that it could also call
Bix and other online services for me, that would be great. Oh, yes.
We're about to install a 3COM network in the office. Can anybody comment
on whether it can handle UNIX mail to (and from) Macs in the manner I
describe, and how well it will cope with Macs on the end of 2400 baud
dial-up modem links?

Thirdly, the drill. Please mail responses, unless you think that everybody
will want to see them at once, in which case go ahead and post, but mail me
a copy too. If I get anything worth summarising, I'll do that. If I get
lots of mail requesting any sort of summary, I'll post one even if there's
not much to tell.

Thanks in advance.
