[comp.sys.mac] Microsoft QuickBasic for the Mac...

garrett@oscar.ccm.udel.edu (12/09/88)

Does anyone know if Microsoft's QuickBasic for the Mac will work on a
512 enhanced? One of my friends is thinking of buying it as a Christmas
present for his sister. The box says you need a Mac Plus, but except for
memory and a few other hardware details, isn't a 512 Enhanced essentially
a Plus?

Please respond via Email if possible, I don't read this group as much as
I'd like to. Too much traffic :-(

					Thanks!

128K ROM's and 1 Meg of Memory are the minimum configuration for the
QuickBasic compiler (this includes 512Ke's with third party 1 meg memory
upgrades), basically a plus and higher cos the compiler needs the memory.

Unlike the PC World, where configurations may be listed on the box as
requiring a 286 (often times the software will run on an 8088, but really
sucks mud), the Macintosh configurations are considered correct as stated
as an absolute minimum.. trust the box!

Rather than mail, I think this subject deserves widespread posting - to all
developers. Why can't the ads be more specific about what you really need
to run the program? It should be stated in terms of real hardware require-
ments, not a few older configurations.

I've had this problem with a 512 enhanced to 2 meg and am now seeing the
same thing with references to a Mac II version and another version. It
seems like there are many references to Mac II that probably differ only
in the ability to display color. For example, the game Tetris looks like
something I could get addicted to. I don't know whether to buy the Mac II
version or the other one. Is the only difference color? What if I don't
have color on a Mac II? Should I buy the other one? Will one copy run on
both a Mac II (no color) and a 512 enhanced?

If you're developing software, please be more specific about what hardware
your software requires and what happens if you run it on different hardware.
