[comp.sys.mac] Disabling internal disk

levin@bbn.com (Joel B Levin) (12/28/88)

Does anyone remember the magic incantation to boot up an SE with an
internal HD from a floppy -- and not mount the internal disk?

[I seem to recall something about holding several keys at once with
two hands and your nose while sliding a floppy in the slot with your
knee...:-)]

	Thanks / JBL

In article <33879@bbn.COM> I asked:

Three correspondents provided both this incantation and an alternate
method which suits my purposes well enough.

Magic procedure: hold COMMAND, OPTION, SHIFT, DELETE simultaneously
while beginning boot up. I found this easiest by getting the "save to
turn off your mac" dialog, positioning the mouse, inserting the
floppy, holding the keys, and hitting the mouse with my elbow.

Alternate: after booting off the floppy in the normal fashion, drop
the hard disk icon(s) in the trash. They will be inaccessible (by
normal means) until you next reboot (I think that there are DAs or
cdevs that can remount them, actually). This is OK as long as you
don't think there is some INIT on the floppy that might do something
bad to your hard disk.
