Hello, all! I have a sick mac plus here at work. A co-worker had his mac plus upgraded to 2.5 Mb, like mine. So, I had 4 256K simms, and I knew someone with a II who could use them. But, the two I just got were from an old mac +, (might have been a 512 that got the apple upgrade) and were 150 ns. parts. No Problem, I thought; my plus is newer, and the simms I already took out were 120 ns parts. So I put on my anti-static strap, opened the case, took out the two fast 256K simms, put in the slow 256K simms, closed everything up, and turned on the machine. it first drew the image of a disk, with a blinking question mark on it, but the rest of the screen was black, not the usual (dithered) gray. I put in my 6.02 System Tools disk, got the happy mac, heard some disk activity, and that was it. The screen is still black, except for a square in the center that contains a happy mac and some of the dithered gray. What gives? command-e ejects the disk, but there's no desktop. The picture in the middle is ok, so that makes me believe that the analog board is OK (I see the vertical white bars if I power off and then back on quickly). If I type command n (new folder), eject the disk, and look at it on another mac, there is no `empty folder'. If I hit the reset button, and hold down cmd, option and shift, the computer won't eject my disk until I hit return and wait through a few minutes of disk activity (the dialog box and then rebuilding the desktop folder). Boy do I feel foolish! It's been a while since I poked around in a mac plus... I swapped out the wrong simms. So, if you see the symptoms described in my previous post, it means you only have 1 meg and r8 has been cut (or the rumored jumper in the rumored new plus) for more than i meg of ram. Oh, well. Learn a new failure mode every day. Chris Wood ...!bcr!nvuxr!ccw or ccw@nvuxr.UUCP
