[comp.sys.mac] Ehman Engineering drives for Mac - ever heard of them?

jeff@drexel.UUCP (Jeff White) (01/05/89)

I recently got a MacMarketer direct marketing magazine, which is basically
just a collection of advertisements and post cards for various Mac
peripherals. One of the cards was for a company called Ehman Engineering, who
were advertising a 30 Mbyte external SCSI drive for $499. The ad says,

	FAST! 12-19 ms
	RELIABLE! Seagate mechanism
	QUIET! Fanless cooling system
	EASY! Preformatted, ready to use
	PORTABLE! Small and lightweight
LOADED! Over 10 Mb of PD software

They have a picture of the drive, and it looks pretty nice. It is a vertical
unit, with height:width about 2:1 (no actual measurements given). It has
cooling slots at the top and bottom, and also seem to have two slanted LEDS on
the front face (power and activity?).
I called them up (they are based in Clearwater, FL, and have an 800 phone #),and got a secretary who said she would send me out some literature. I'm not
expecting a jackpot here (I don't belive the 12-19 ms claim, most drives are
fanless, and the PD software is usually crap anyway), but it looks nice
(exterior wise), and for $500, a 30 Meg SCSI ain't bad.
I'm just wondering if anyone had heard of the company, dealt with them, or
maybe has seen a drive similar in description to this one? They also
advertise as accepting Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, which reduces
my fears of them being a fly by night company. Any help or suggetsions would
be appreciated.

Don't know about their hard drives, but i once bought a floppy (800k)
drive, and it had a problem that trashed a good portion of my library.
I went through 3 of them before demanding that the mail order company
that i bought it from (Programs Plus) replace it with another make,
which they did. Anyway, if you _really_ want to give them a chance,
dealers will have better prices than buying direct.

Ehman Engineering has made external 800K drives for a few years. I
bought one about a year and a half ago. I had problems with the first
one, so I returned it, received a new drive a couple of weeks later,
and haven't had any problems since. I would buy from them again -
their service and product were good.
