[comp.sys.mac] 6.0.2: unlimited downloadable fonts: how?

chuq%plaid@Sun.COM (Chuq Von Rospach) (01/10/89)

I've been beating my head against the wall on this, and I can't figure out
what (if anything -- it could be a bug) I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to use
the "unlimimted dowloadable fonts" option of the 6.0.2 laserwriter driver.
My printer's a LW+ using the 38 ROMs.

If I enable the option, the system seems to make one change successfully,
but when it tries to change again, it can't find the font, and replaces it
with Courier. Depending on the document, some to most of the text from that
point on is in Courier instead of the original font.

Take, for instance, this sample page. The primary font is Garamond-Light,
with pieces of it made bold, italic or bold-italic at random just to check
on it. It starts out in the roman, switches to bold, but when it switches
back, it goes to Courier. From there on, the entire page is in Courier
EXCEPT the Bold-Italic, which prints fine. Watching the laserwriter dialog I
get these continuing "Can't find Garamond-Bold. Using Courier" messages
[silly question: why doesn't the laserwriter driver keep messages around?
Having to sit and stare at a dialog box for 5 minutes waiting for an error
message that disappears while I'm blinking is *not* fun....]

If I turn off unlimited downloadable fonts, the page prints fine.

I've tried everything -- turned off multifinder, turned off background
printing, gotten rid of all the INITs. I've re-installed the Garamond screen
fonts into the System file and removed Suitcase and the NFNT harmonization.
I'm running as generic a 6.0.2 as you can build, and if I use downloadable
fonts (and they're Adobe fonts at that) this feature seems to be broken.

Has someone gotten this working? If so, HOW? Is this simply a bug I've run
into? I really need this feature, especially with RSG 4.5 being memory
hungry in the Laserwriter. After all this, I'm pretty well convinced that
it's a bug in the system software, because I can reproduce this with both
Word and RSG (and various releases of each).

The answer, of course, is a LW II with a hard disk. But that's not an option
right now... Any ideas/suggestions/help/confirmation?

argh!

chuq (tired of fighting printers at midnight).
