Hello everybody. I can't figure out what it means to lock a file thru the Get Info dialog. When I do this to a file on my Mac SE HD, it doesn't seem to do any good; I punch the "Locked" box, close the dialog, drag the icon to the trash, and the system allows it. When I boot off of a system on a floppy and do the same thing, I get a dialog disallowing the trashing of the file when I drag it to the trash. In either case the system in use is 6.0.2. What is it about the system on my HD that allows me to trash locked files? --Thanks! //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Internet: yahnke@vms.macc.wisc.edu Bitnet: yahnke@wiscmacc(.bitnet) \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

What this likely means is that the LAYO resource of your Finder has been modified, and the "Skip Trash Warnings" bit has been set. Go in with ResEdit, open up LAYO ID 128 in the Finder, and look around a bit. Or, if you haven't already hacked your Finder, just start up from a System Tools disk and replace it. There is a program out there, Layout, which is supposed to let you easily change/modify this resource; however, I have not had ANY success in using the more recent versions (1.6 and 1.7, which are needed to deal with Finder 6.x). Even with ALL of my INITs removed, I still get instant system error w/1.7 on my Mac II. There is a bit that can be set in the LAY0 resource to skip trash warnings. That has probably been set in your Hard Disk Finder. It is not the default setting. The warnings about trashing applications is controlled by this as well. Dennis Cohen Claris Corp. ------------ Disclaimer: Any opinions expressed above are _MINE_!

Yes, it can be set to skip trash warnings. But you don't get a trash warning if you try to trash a *locked* file. You get a message indicating that the "Item is locked or in use" and *can't* be thrown away. If you try to trash an *unlocked* application file, you will get a warning message with <CANCEL> and <OKAY> buttons. But you should never be able to trash a *locked* file at all. BTW, to skip the warnings when deleting an application, hold down the OPTION key before you drag the item to the trash. -Shabtai Klein ____________________________________________________________________ | | UUCP: uunet!pyramid!cdp!sklein \ | A Woman who tries | Internet: cdp!sklein@arisia.xerox.com | | to be equal to a man | BitNet: cdp!sklein%labrea@stanford | | lacks ambition! | PhoneNet: (301) 270-2250 | \___________________________________________________________________/
