Does anyone know of a Mac Plus software package that generates a family tree? What I'd like to do is enter peoples names, their relationship to me, their origin, and other misc information and be able to maintain and modify the tree regularly. I would also like to be able to print out this information in tree format. Does something like this exist? Also, how about a recommendation for a personal accounting package. I'd like to keep track of budgets and my checking account. I know there are lots of packages out there, but some of them seem extremely over priced! On the other hand, I don't want to buy a cheep package only to find out that it won't meet my needs and have to dish out some more bucks. Please write me at att!asr1!bih or the above address. Thanks in advance, Goo Goo Ga Joob, Goo Goo Ga Joob, Bruce

In an article from bih@cbnews.att.com, we read: >Does anyone know of a Mac Plus software package that generates a family >tree? The September 1988 issue of _MacWorld_ reviews three programs in the $100-150 range -- all of which had flaws; the article would recommend only Family Heritage File (Starcom, $149). Fortunately, there's a $35 program which is probably exactly what you need: the Macintosh version of PAF (Personal Ancestral File). Though produced by the LDS (Mormon) Church, which has a religious interest in doing genealogy properly, the program is available to anyone. Those in soc.roots (the genealogy newsgroup) who have used PAF recommend it wholeheartedly. I'm ordering it this week; at $35 + tax and shipping, it can't be beaten. PAF, which is also available for Apple II and MS-DOS machines, can be ordered by credit-card at: (800) 453-3860. >Also, how about a recommendation for a personal accounting package. What exactly do you want to do with budgets? If you're going to keep things simple, I would wholeheartedly recommend Quicken, by Intuit. It's inex- pensive (list $49 -- I got it for $35) -- handles all sorts of transactions for checking and saving accounts, including repeating transactions -- and prints out reports in a variety of formats. (It also allows you to print checks, though I've never used that feature.) It won't do things like stocks and mortgages and depreciation, though, so you have to decide exactly what it is that you want. For my budgeting, Quicken is ideal. Intuit, Inc.: (800) 624-8754. Disclaimer: I am not associated with either the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) or with Intuit; I'm just an enthusiastic consumer of their software. -- Ellen Keyne Seebacher University of Chicago Computing Orgzns. see1@tank.uchicago.edu staff.ellen@chip.uchicago.edu
