[comp.sys.mac] binhex versions

AXS101@PSUVM.BITNET (Adrian Sullivan) (12/14/88)

ok, now every time i see someone post a file they converted with binhex, they
ALWAYS say to convert with version 4.0 ... well, what's wrong with 5.0? is
                                   ```
there something i dont know about 5.0 and should? i've had no problems with it
so far, and still dont know why everyone says CONVERT WITH BINHEX 4.0
and not CONVERT WITH BINHEX VERSION 4.0 OR LATER. if there is something wrong
with my version, please let me know. either e-mail or netpost, doesn't matter
to me, i'll read it one way or the other
                                                  :)
Possibly there is: BinHex 4.0 is PUBLIC DOMAIN, as contrasted to BinHex 5.0
which is SHAREWARE.
If you use BinHex 4.0 to convert your application to a text file, it
automatically inserts the header "This file must be converted with Binhex 4.0".
>if there is something wrong with my version, please let me know.
OF COURSE, you paid the shareware fee for version 5.0, right?
I'll bet that when that comment was put into Binhex 4.0, it was
intended as a warning not to try to convert with an OLDER version;
Binhex 5.0 probably didn't even exist then!
Is it possible to tell me how BinHex works? I'm asking this for a friend of minewho has no access. Are there sources available and if so could they be forwardedto me?
Thank you very much in advance!
Also, When you convert with Binhex 5.0, it produces characters that
my messages program does not like (definately not just standard text chars)
