[comp.sys.mac] Everex harddrive for Mac

west@bnrmtv.UUCP (andrew west) (01/17/89)

A standard harddrive question...

Has anybody had any experience (that they would like to share)
with Everex harddrives for the Mac (I am looking at an
80 Meg version). Any problems? Pros and cons of the software
included with the drive? Any repairs or returns required?

                                Thanks for any advice,

I've had some experience ... I own an Everex EMAC-20D that I use with
my Mac Plus.

The only thing I don't like about it is its noise. The fan reminds me of
a jet engine. Anyone else have one like this? I've wondered if it's just
my particular unit or if all of Everex's 20 megs drives are that noisy.

We've got two of the older generation (long, shoebox-shaped) 90 meg Everex
drives at work in use as file server hard disks. Not so noisy, and fast.
They have been on 24 hours/day for months and we haven't had problems. One
had to be sent back when it was new because it squeaked, though.

Apparently Everex just redesigned some (or all?) of their drives. We bought
two new 80 meg drives, and they're only about the size of an external floppy.
Very quiet and very fast. No problems so far.

The software that comes with it is relatively worthless ... I just use the
standard Apple hard disk software.

I have a Everex 40MB internal. It is very nice and quiet. In fact, too quiet
at times. It can be hard to tell if the machine is really running and accessing
the hard drive or is locked!

The only qualm I have about it is that it is slower than other hard drives after
a crash. I have a friend with a Jasmine 80 and his will pop right back up after
a crash like nothing happened. My hd on the other hand can take up to 30 or 40
seconds getting back up. No big deal to most ppl, but I crash my drive a lot
with all the program development that I do.

I'm guessing that you mean a _machine_ crash, and not a disk drive crash, but
if not, ignore what follows:

Do you and your friend have an equivalent number of files? If your friend
has a far smaller number of files, the system has to do less work after a
crash (when verifying the integrity of an improperly unmounted drive). Ditto
if you have significantly larger files, or if your friend regularly compresses
his disk, and you don't.

30-40 secs is a fairly long time; I hope some of these suggestions help.

He had more files than me. And yes I do mean a machine crash not a hard drive crash. I had/have about 35MB on my disk while he has about 65-70MB on his.

I don't know if it a quirk in the Everex driver software or maybe in the
controller card or whatever.

I'd like to know if anyone else who bought one of their drives around August 87
has the same problem.
