Backgrounder and Print Monitor are application which allow background printing,
just as you suspected. They are completely documented in the Macintosh
System Software User's Guide, version 6.0, on page 321ff. To summarize, though,
if you are running MultiFinder, you can go into Chooser, and turn on
background printing. Then, when you print, the print file gets spooled and
the Print Monitor application is launched. You can switch to this application
to kill off a print job, and it will use the notification manager to alert
you if there are problems with the printer, etc.

You might notice some degradation while the background printing is going on.
